Excavated .58 caliber “minie ball” of Southern manufacture. Nose cast bullet with six fine grooves, a thick skirt with off-center cavity. There are mold seams visible up the sides and there is also a teat protruding from the tip of the conical cavity. Usually known as a “recut mold” bullet by collectors.

The “six fine grooves” were a product of when the three original, deep grooves were machined out of the mold so as not to be so obtrusive. There was likely a problem getting the cast bullets out of the molds if they were hung up on the three rings inside the mold that formed larger, deeper grooves.

Patina is a mix of white and tan overall. Recovered from a Confederate camp outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia.  [jet] [ph:jet]
