This Colt Model 1860 Army is serial #39860 and was produced in mid-1862. The serial number matches except for the wedge pin which is unmarked. All metal surfaces are gray with a spotted peppery mottling.
The round barrel measures 8.00 inches long with the blade shaped front sight present at the muzzle. Barrel marking is good and reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA. “The loading lever is complete with catch and operates properly. The barrel and loading lever have light scattered pinprick pitting. The bore is dark with good rifling and a few scattered shadows from built up dirt. Approx. halfway down the barrel there is a small ring of pitting.
The 6-shot cylinder retains approx. 30% of the cylinder scene and has all the original nipples in good condition. All the stops are gone. Action is stiff. Cylinder does not index correctly. Half cock safety is good. Hammer holds at full cock but the cylinder does not lock. The surface of the cylinder matches the rest of the weapon in appearance.
The frame has three screws and is crisply marked “COLT’S PATENT” in two lines below the cylinder on the left side. Screw heads are good and show little wear. The frame has very minor pitting and matches the rest of the weapon in color.
Walnut grips have light wear with a faint military inspector’s cartouche on the left side. [ad] [ph:L]
