Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball revolver commonly referred to as the 1849 “London” Pocket Model. Very similar to the Hartford-made guns, other than markings.
This personal sidearm, in very good original condition overall, features a 5” long, octagonal barrel matched to a .31 caliber, five-shot cylinder that has a roll pressed design of a “stagecoach” scene. The scene remains clearly visible. Safety pins show moderate wear. All serial numbers (8858) match, including wedge. Number indicates that this was manufactured in late 1856.
“ADDRESS COL COLT / LONDON” is strongly stamped on the top facet of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is stamped on the left side of the frame. Screw heads are in good condition. English crown proof marks are found on the cylinder and barrel.
Gun metal is dark gray overall with small traces of original colors. Octagonal barrel has a few small dings, mostly around the wedge. Revolver is mechanically crisp and strong. Cylinder freely spins at half cock.
Grips are of varnished, one-piece, walnut in good condition. Back strap and the trigger guard are steel.
A very nice London-made Colt Pocket revolver. [jet] [ph:L]
