A Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in very good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.
This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. All matching serial numbers (57838) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, and even on the wedge. Serial number dates the manufacture to mid-1862.
Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel address, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA” is strong. Rolled cylinder scene has a few dings but remains quite visible. Patent date and serial number are bold. The “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side is also strong. Original nipples are in good condition; all safety pins are hammered down.
Brass trigger guard has a mellow golden patina. Patina on gunmetal is an overall pewter/gray color with good traces of original blue on barrel.
Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition. Cartouche remains clear on the right side; with well-worn one partially visible on left side.
This is a classic, war-time production “Colt Army” revolver in very nice condition. [jet] [ph:L]
