This is a very good, near fine condition Colt M1851 London Navy. These were made by Colt in London from 1853 through 1856 in their own serial number range, totaling 42,910. This Second Model has matching numbers throughout, 39962, placing it toward the end of the production run, likely dating 1856, and is complete and correct with steel backstrap, large oval trigger guard, London style hammer knurling, etc. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "- ADDRESS COL. COLT LONDON -" in a single line with dashes at either end. The left frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" and British "Crown/V" and "Crown/GP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left rear of the barrel lug and on the cylinder.
Lettering and numbering are crisp. The Texas Navy battle scene on the cylinder is very good, and the battle date along the forward edge of the cylinder is visible. The Colt’s patent cylinder stamp is a little light “Patent No.,” but “Colt’s” and the serial number are sharp. The pistol rates near fine with the metal surfaces mostly smooth, showing just a few light dings along the top right edge of the barrel at rear and one larger one on the lower left. There are significant traces of thin blue and plum mixing, with a mottled silver-gray patina, and stronger blue on the right side midway back to the frame. The lever shows some thin, but vibrant blue and iron frame shows significant remnant of mottled case color, stronger on the right, but visible on both sides. The back and grip straps show a thin brown patina mixing with silver gray. The grips have good fit and color, though with wear to the lower edges, some shallow chips and dings, and some dents on the buttflat. The nipples are not battered, but do show some crustiness from firing and there is some shallow pitting on the rear of the cylinder next to them from the caps, though the forcing cone and front of the cylinder are pretty clean. Mechanics work properly and well.
This is a very good example of the difficult-to-find Colt London M1851 Navy revolver. [sr] [ph:m]
