Image shows Slidell in a dark civilian suit posed leaning against a table with one hand on his hip.
Good contrast and clarity.
Reverse has E. Anthony imprint from a Brady negative.
Slidell was born in 1793 and served in the Louisiana State Legislature, as a Representative in the US House and as a Senator. During the Civil War he and another diplomat were on a British ship heading to England as Confederate ambassadors. Their ship was stopped by a US Navy vessel and Slidell and his companion were taken into custody. This incident was known as “The Trent Affair” which caused friction between the United States and Britain ending in the release of Slidell and his companion.
Slidell died in 1871. [ad][PH:L]
