An original cap and ball percussion sidearm produced by the Whitney Firearms Company of New Haven, Connecticut, this sidearm is designated the Navy Second Model Revolver, 2nd Type. In good overall condition, this solid frame sidearm is a .36 caliber, three-screw model frame with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long, octagonal barrel. A total quantity of 33,000 of these handguns were produced from the late 1850’s through the early 1860s with over half the Second Models purchased by the government.
The back of the cylinder has six worn safety notches for the hammer; none of the original roll engraved scene on the cylinder. A solid frame revolver, it bears matching serial numbers of “25560” on the iron loading lever, the cylinder pin, on the back of the cylinder, and inside of the both grips. Two-piece varnished walnut grips are in good condition with smooth even wear. They display the rounded juncture to the frame and the grip edges show light wear. The loading lever pin is missing on this piece.
All gunmetal retains a pewter-gray patina with some darker shades. Revolver features an exterior surface that shows scattered light dings plus wear marks, all consistent with this sidearm’s age and use. Barrel address marking is the standard two-line block letter “E. WHITNEY / N. HAVEN” with an anchor stamped farther back.
Sidearm has a brass trigger guard and an iron backstrap. Mechanics are good, tight and crisp. All frame screws are good with expected wear.
A nice Navy-stamped revolver that just needs one “pin”. [jet] [ph:L]
