Original, U. S. marked, Third Model version of the popular 1851 Colt Navy Revolver in good overall condition.
Manufactured sometime in the 1st quarter of 1857, this M1851 Navy bears matching serial number #66471 marked on its components including the wedge. Weapon has a six-shot cylinder and features an octagonal 7½” long barrel with attached working loading lever. Barrel has moderate scattered surface pitting but a strong maker address that reads “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW YORK CITY”. All gunmetal exhibits a light gray sheen overall and shows signs of having been lightly cleaned. Bore has good rifling and is very clean.
Mechanics are very tight with strong half cock and full cock positions. Crisp indexing. Cylinder bears 80% of the roll-engraved naval engagement scene between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy. Cylinder has an area of heavy pitting on one side. All but one of the cylinder pins are present and the six original nipples are strong, not chipped or broken. “COLTS PATENT” stamp on the left of frame is clear, and also has the martial-mark “U. S.” just below. Frame screws are very slightly buggered. The original, one-piece varnished walnut grips are in good condition with minor dings. Sidearm bears no evidence of silver wash on the brass trigger guard. All brass wears a bright patina. [ad] [ph:L]
