Weapon is a .44 caliber, four-screw Colt Army revolver with a 6-shot rebated cylinder. Metal surfaces are gray except for the frame which still shows some case colors. Serial number on all parts, including the wedge, are matching and bear number 23138 showing the weapon was manufactured in the latter part of 1861.

Round barrel is 8.00” long with a strong stamp of “- ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA. -” Blade front sight is present above the muzzle. Bore is clean and only exhibits light dust. Rifling is good.

Cylinder retains very little of the cylinder scene. Less than 10%. All stops are in good condition and all original nipples are present. Patent stamps are good. Action works well.

Grips are original one-piece black walnut in good condition. There is no cartouche visible. Right grip has a closed crack running from top to bottom beginning about an 0.08 of an inch from the frame. This is minor.

Weapon is equipped with recoil shield cutouts and the small notch on the backstrap. “COLTS / PATENT” stamped on the left side of the frame is strong. Frame screws are good with only one showing light wear. Trigger guard is showing brass.

With the revolver is a letter from Colt’s research department stating that revolver #23138 was part of a shipment of 600 guns to Colonel. G. D. Ramsay at the Washington Arsenal in Washington, D.C. on December 26, 1861.  [AD]
