A cap and ball percussion sidearm, this specimen is a complete Civil War Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver in very good original condition. In production from 1861 through 1873 with nearly 39,000 produced.
This revolver is a .36 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. Strong rifling. Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition. Revolver has matching serial numbers #16438 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder and wedge. Serial number dates the manufacture in the second half of 1863.
Mechanics are perfect. Barrel address clearly reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Cylinder scene retains much of the rolled scene with patent date and serial number visible. The “COLTS / PATENT” and “36 CAL” marks on the left side are visible. All nipples original with only one showing damage. All cylinder safeties hammered down. Screw heads are in good condition; possibly one being replaced. Brass trigger guard shows no traces of silver plating. Gun metal and brass are overall semi-bright. Mechanics are strong and crisp.
Butt strap is engraved “W.A.S. Co. H 15th”.
This is a classic, war-time production, Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver that needs further research. [jet]
