Presented here is an original, Manhattan .36 caliber “Navy type” revolver, Series IV. This cap and ball percussion sidearm manufactured by the Manhattan Firearms Company of Newark, New Jersey, c. 1859 thru 1868, is truly a remarkable specimen. Handsome and complete, this sidearm is one of a total quantity of 78,000 Manhattan Navy pocket handguns produced by the firm in Newark. Revolver carries serial #45454 and is classed as a Manhattan Series “IV”, with its .36 caliber five-shot engraved cylinder, and the two-line maker marking on the top facet of the octagonal barrel. Marking reads “MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO NEWARK, N.J. / PATENTED MARCH 8, 1864.”
The ornate, unrebated cylinder surface was very finely executed with detailed roll engraving of five distinctive oval panels with military and naval scenes. Most of the border detail remains sharp but the individual oval scenes are weak. Also bears a sharp and clear patent date stamping “Dec 27, 1859” on cylinder edge. All nipples are in excellent condition. Cylinder is fitted to a 4” long octagonal barrel. No bluing remains.
In very good condition, this sidearm has a three-screw frame and bears close resemblance to the Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver. In mechanically strong and crisp condition, the revolver features excellent one-piece varnished walnut grips. The bottom of the grip has two initials cut in, else very good. Revolver retains 60% of its silver-plated finish on the gripstraps. All screw heads are in very good condition.
This Manhattan .36 caliber revolver is one that would enhance any collection of military secondary sidearms. [jet]
