Manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Company of Middletown, Connecticut, this original cap and ball percussion sidearm is an original, double-action Navy Model revolver in very good condition overall. These type weapons were in production from 1861 through 1865 with a total of 20,000 sidearms produced at the company’s Middletown location. This wonderful Savage revolver is in uncleaned attic condition and bears serial number #1546 stamped on the inner side plate and serial # 13951 stamped on the inside frame. No original colors remain on the weapon but it does retain strong maker markings on the flat of the top strap that read “SAVAGE R.F.A. CO. / H.S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17, 1856 / JAN 18, 1859 / MAY 15, 1860”. Sidearm is a .36 caliber double-action model with a 6-shot rounded cylinder, a 7 1/8” long octagonal barrel that employs a hinged type loading lever assembly. Barrel retains its brass cone-type front sight. Revolver frame is flat-sided and fitted with a heart-shaped trigger / lever guard.
Fine two-piece walnut grips wear a pleasing dark patina. Visible on the left grip is a clear inspector’s cartouche along with some light surface grime. The round cylinder is unmarked and the original nipples protrude from the side of the cylinder. Original frame screws not buggered up but one appears to be a period replacement. Entire revolver displays a dark, dusky gray patina on the metal surfaces in addition to a few scattered tiny patches of rust oxidation. Mechanically strong and tight. Most of the Savage Navy revolver production went to government contracts for both the US Army and the US Navy branches. This original Civil War Savage D.A. Navy Model revolver is a fine original specimen that would compliment any gun collection. [RA]
