Made by the Remington Arms Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut between 1915 and 1918, this large pistol is a single-shot flare gun used by the US Navy for signaling prior to World War One. One of some 24,500 units manufactured by the firm, the pistol was also adopted by the US Army during WW1 but never used in operations.
In good overall condition, the breech-loading pistol measures 12” long and has a large ten-gauge barrel used to fire signal flares and shells. The 9” long round steel barrel retains much of its original bluing. Pistol’s one-piece brass frame has the integral spur trigger and extends as the butt strap. Two-piece mahogany grips are in very good condition but show no cartouche. Barrel has one or two spots of pinprick pitting. Brass frame is worn and heavily scratched.
Matching serial # of 5130 is seen on the frame and barrel. Barrel breech is strongly stamped with maker address “MARK III THE REMINGTON ARMS – UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO INC, / REMINGTON BRIDGEPORT WORKS – BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A.” Bore is smooth and clean. Mechanics are tight. [ad]
