Item Code: 172-4079

A percussion sidearm, this specimen is a complete Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in very good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War.

This revolver is a government-inspected, .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. Grips are original one-piece walnut in very good condition with two faint government inspector’s cartouches. Grips have some light wear at bottom edges.

Barrel exhibits a bright appearance with hints of its original bluing around the muzzle area. The rest of the barrel has scattered spots of mottling overall along with small scattered pockets of pinprick pitting. Barrel has a strong bore that needs a light cleaning. Top of barrel bears a crisp stamping of “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA”

Cylinder scene is remarkably strong and in detailed complete condition however there is some light scattered pinprick pitting on the surface. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame is strong with the bottom of the last two letters being a bit faint. All nipples are original and in fine condition. Cylinder safeties are hammered down. None of the original case colors remains on the frame area. Revolver has matching serial numbers including the wedge. Serial #96567 dates the manufacture in mid-1863.

Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are perfect. Original frame screws are in very good condition with only one slightly buggered.

A classic, wartime production, three-screw Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in very nice condition.   [ad]
