This original cap and ball percussion handgun is a Civil War era Remington Model 1861 Navy revolver that was converted post war to accept metallic cartridges. Some records indicate the Navy gave Remington a contract in 1875 to convert 1,000 .36 caliber percussion revolvers to .38 centerfire or to .38 rimfire.
The sidearm was a .36 caliber handgun converted to .38 caliber metallic and equipped with a modified, 6-shot, unrebated cylinder. The nipple section was cut off the original cylinder and filled with a ¼” spacer plate with an integral loading gate attached. Another modification was added to the hammer to accommodate the rimfire cartridge. A third change added an ejector rod by using the lever screw and locking the end of the ejector rod beneath a new cut notch in the loading lever. Retained is th
e 7½” long octagonal, screw-on barrel with its threads visible at the breech end of the frame. Grips are original, two-piece walnut in very good condition. No government inspector’s cartouches visible. The five-digit serial number (#42093) is stamped into the bottom portion of the grip frame. This revolver has no original coloring and has scattered rust pitting and dark oxidation on the gunmetal. Sidearm features a brass trigger guard, steel backstrap, and the low hammer spur. Barrel marking on top facet spotty and almost gone. Mechanics strong. Nice overall condition.
