Serial number 144469 [all numbers matching, but period replacement wedge, numeral “297”] which dates the piece to late 1863. Standard eight inch barrel with three receiver screw and brass trigger guard/ back-strap. Walnut grips with government inspector cartouches present on both sides. Sub-inspector markings present on barrel and under trigger guard. Six round cylinder exhibits standard etched scene depicting Texas-Mexican naval battle. Top barrel marking: “ADDRESS Saml. Colt New-York U. S. America.”
All markings sharp and legible, as is the cylinder engraving. Barrel exhibits traces of original blue, especially strong under the loading lever and around the wedge area. The balance is a nice light plum patina. Bore displays sharp rifling. Grips exhibit light scratches and bruises customary with age and usage. Excellent “action” - i.e. cylinder indexing. Frame with traces of case coloring visible. Hammer with case colors also. Overall condition, VG plus. Solid specimen M1860 Colt. Scarce with grip cartouches, fine cylinder scene and superb cylinder indexing.
