EXCELLENT-PLUS, CIVIL WAR ERA, REMINGTON NEW MODEL 1858 ARMY REVOLVER

$3,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 31-1529

This cap and ball percussion handgun is a Civil War era Remington New Model 1858 Army revolver in excellent condition. These military sidearms by Remington arms were in production from 1863 to 1875. The New Model Army became the strongest competitor against the Colt Model 1860 revolver during that time. The Union government acquired a total of some 122,000 such New Model revolvers for military use.

This remarkable, government-inspected sidearm is an original, martial .44 caliber handgun equipped with a 6-shot round, unrebated cylinder matched to an 8” long octagonal barrel. Screw-on barrel shows threads visible at the breech end of the frame. Grips are original, two-piece walnut in excellent condition with a handsome, deep government inspector cartouche on the left side grip. The five-digit serial number (#68506) is stamped into the bottom facet of the barrel above the loading lever and on the grip frame.

This revolver retains most of its original factory bluing including the frame, cylinder, loading lever, and backstrap. Unfortunately a portion of the bluing has rubbed off from the muzzle area of the barrel. Revolver displays traces of case colors on the hammer. Sidearm features a brass trigger guard, steel backstrap and the low hammer spur with sub-inspector markings on various components. All original nipples. Barrel marking clear and reads “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A. / NEW MODEL”. Numerous sub-inspector marks on the weapon. Revolver mechanics strong and crisp.

This Remington New Model Army revolver is a fine representative sidearm of the Civil War and later. One was carried by famous showman William “Buffalo Bill” Cody from 1866 through 1875.
