Manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Company, this original cap and ball percussion sidearm is an original, double-action Navy Model revolver in good condition. In 1860, business partners Henry S. North and Edward Savage of Middletown, Connecticut established the manufacturing firm in that city and produced a total of 20,000 such sidearms from 1861 through the mid 1860s. Revolver is a .36 caliber model with a six-shot, plain cylinder, a 7 1/8” long octagonal barrel that employs a hinged type loading lever assembly. Barrel has a screw-in brass front sight. Revolver iron frame is flat-sided and fitted with a heart-shaped trigger / lever guard.
Two-piece walnut grips are used and exhibit a mellow brown patina. No government inspector’s cartouches are visible, but both grips exhibit a ¼” chip at each front inside corner. Barrel is unstamped. Standard maker marking on top frame strap “SAVAGE R. F. A. CO. / H. S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17, 1856 / JAN 18, 1859, MAY 15, 1860.” Also revolver bears serial # 2453 on the frame and on the upper side plate. The plain unrebated cylinder is unmarked. Nipples original save for one. One original frame screw and two reproduction. Loading lever is not the original and its small frame screw is a reproduction. Entire revolver displays a cleaned up appearance with a scattered plum patina on the metal surfaces. Some light patches of rust pitting and oxidation also seen. Mechanics good.
