This vintage specimen of a Civil War era sidearm was produced by the Allen & Wheeling manufacturing firm of Worcester, Massachusetts. Designated the Allen Center Hammer Army Revolver Model, the weapon is a .44 caliber percussion cap and ball sidearm of which an estimated 700 pieces were produced from 1861through 1862. This sidearm differs from the A&W Sidehammer revolver as this model has a centrally located hammer and a cylinder pin mounted at the front of the frame.
In very good overall condition, this handgun bears a serial (possibly an assembly #) of “116.” Fitted with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder, it is matched to a 7½” long, half round, half octagonal barrel. Cylinder is plain and shows no original colors, as do all the gunmetal components. All metal does appear to have been cleaned at one time and wears a clear sealant. Plain two-piece grips are of varnished walnut and are in excellent condition.
Barrel has a three-line address stamped on its left facet and reads “ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCESTOR. MASS. U. / S. ALLEN’S PT’S. JAN.13, DEC 15, 1857, SEPT. 7, 1858.” Stamping is thin on far left marking. Mechanics are crisp. Overall the revolver wears at light dusky gray coloring with scattered areas of rust pitting and moderate wear marks. All frame screws very good. This Allen & Wheelock Center Hammer .44 caliber Army revolver makes a handsome collectible.
