ORIGINAL ‘ADAMS PATENT’ PERCUSSION REVOLVER

Item Code: 740-172

Presented here is an original, single-action Adams Patent percussion revolver. Produced by T. Turner in Reading, England, the firm exported many of these sturdy, solid-frame, five-shot Adams revolvers to the Confederacy during the Civil War. Considered a secondary-issue sidearm in the South, the cap and ball revolver was also privately purchased by many officers for personal use.

Sidearm features the most popular bore size of 54 (.45 caliber) with a five-shot cylinder matched to a 5¾” octagonal barrel. Piece measures 12” long, weighs 30 oz. and displays a one-piece, English, dark walnut grip that features very sharp and distinct factory checkering. The oval butt plate is secured by one screw and has no lanyard swivel ring attached likely indicating a civilian purchase. An external side slide bar located on the left side of the frame behind the recoil shield allows for disassembly. Attached loading lever is flat that secures to the bottom of the frame.

Walnut stock is beautifully checkered from the factory and retains its sharpness. Barrel proof stampings crown over ‘GP andcrown over a ‘V’ appear on the upper left flat. Top flat of the receiver engraved with the maker’s mark of “T. TURNER, MARKET PLACE, READING.” Lower right side of frame exhibits the engraving “ADAMS PATENT, No. 30429” with the same serial number engraved on the cylinder along with various proof marks. An assembly number “571” appears on the front face of the cylinder. All gunmetal retains 80% or better of its original bluing finish. Other areas wear an untouched smooth dark patina.

The five-shot, unrebated cylinder retains its five original nipples which protrude from the back of the cylinder. Five British proof marks easily visible and clearly stamped on the cylinder surface at the rear between the chambers. All frame screws original and not buggered up. Mechanics are crisp and tight. This pleasing, imported ‘Adams Patent’ single-action revolver is a quality specimen of a popular secondary sidearm and is sure to compliment any classic gun collection.
