Serial No. 23179. .28 Caliber, five shot percussion revolver in light oak case measuring 5.75" x 9.25". Dusty velvet lined case contains five sections for revolver & accoutrements [bullet mold, percussion cap container, small powder flask, and lead balls] and all of them are present, though the case is missing its front lock key. A circular sticker ["S. Sutherland/Importer of/ English,/ French & German Guns/ Rifles, Pistols & C./ No. 132 Main St./ Richmond] is attached to inner velvet lid.

The two-handled ball & bullet mold has maker-mark "Colt/Patent/ L", and measures 4.25" in length. Circular green percussion tin carries a "Union Metallic Cartridge Co." label, is lightly chipped, and contains 20-plus percussion caps. Brass flask with eagle & stars exhibits medium coppery patina with trace of verdigris & one or two miniscule dents. Bullet compartment contains bag of 30 plus balls.

The Model 2 revolver has a 3.5 octagonal barrel, the Hartford Colt address, and the pointing hand motif. Barrel markings, and the butt serial number are relatively crisp, though the Cabin and Indian cylinder scene markings are worn smooth. Casehardened lever and hammer, with barrel and receiver retaining 80% of original bluing. Bore clean, action crisp. Walnut grips smooth with slight loss of finish at on the butt right edge. Else VG, and handsome. Colt root revolvers in good cases with accoutrements are scarce. An excellent collectible.
