Presented here is a mint condition, Civil War era musket accoutrement referred to as a ‘tompion’. The cylindrical device has a brass top cap with an inner metal shank wrapped with cork. Device was utilized to plug the muzzle of the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-muskets when the weapons were in transit or when they were not in use. In remarkable unissued condition, this cylindrical brass and cork artifact measures 1¾” long x ½” in diameter. Top area has a bulb-type finger pull cap. Cap is stamped with “E / British crown / 30”. Shank fits snugly into the muzzle. A minty brass & cork M1853 Enfield musket tompion.
