A truly outstanding ammunition artifact is this original specimen of an unfired .577 caliber, Snider, centerfire metallic cartridge. In 1864, the British Army adopted the Snider breech-loading rifle and in 1866, the rifle and this cartridge was adopted as the standard firearm and ammunition of the English armed forces. It is commonly called a ‘Boxer’ or ‘Snider’ and is composed of several pieces or sections. Bullet measures 2 7/16” long and has a 1 15/16” long coiled paper and brass case with an iron head. The conical lead bullet uses a 480 grain load with 70 grams of black powder. A scarce, fine collectible that would enhance any infantryman’s display or ammunition collection.
