“US” MARKED M-1855 MAINSPRING VISE

$65.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1268-190

Unissued mainspring vise for the Springfield rifle. Original blued finish and crisply stamped “US”.

The mainspring vise was an essential tool for the soldier, enabling him to compress the spring powering the lock of his musket or rifle so that the lock could be disassembled for cleaning or repair. Needless to say, sergeants were probably supervising things closely and keeping these out of the hands of the idle, the curious, and the aspiring amateur gunsmiths in the company.

Excellent condition. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.  [jet][ph:L]
