Offered here is a fine presentation of Civil War small arms ammunition packaging. The salmon-colored paper is the outer wrapper of a pack of ten rifle musket cartridges as issued to Civil War infantrymen.
The wrapper, tied with string, is unusual in that tan paper with the norm. This salmon-colored paper was usually reserved for Williams patent cartridges, but obviously used here out of some necessity. The regulation tan paper cartridge is from this pack and was for the U.S. .58 caliber rifled musket. This is the typical "minie ball" cartridge of the American Civil War. Known as the "regulation" or "American military" style of cartridge, i.e., powder charge and bullet wrapped completely in paper, tied with string over the nose of the bullet, with the powder end being closed with folds to form a tail.
Also from this wrapper is the package of 12 percussion caps. Wrapped in tan cartridge paper, one of these was included in every package of ten rifle musket cartridges.
Wrapper has a tear and some loss, cartridge and caps are in excellent condition. [jet][ph:L]
