This is a two-piece, scissor-type bullet mold made of brass. The two halves are held together with an iron pin. Each half is marked with a “2”. The mold measures 5.25” long overall. Brass exhibits a very dark patina overall.
Mold casts a small 3-groove “minie” ball. Cavity measures approximately .50 caliber. The bullets were nose cast and there is a narrow “funnel” leading to the nose of the bullet. A larger hole at the base is where an iron plug would have been inserted to form the cone-shaped cavity.
In June 1861, the Tennessee State Military Board had miniature Minie ball molds (mini-minies) made in many sizes for use with the large number of miscellaneous “country” rifles brought from home into the Confederate service.
This is a very rare Confederate bullet mold. [jet] [ph:L]
