A perfect pasteboard box full of cartridges. A bright green paper covers and seals the box. A yellow label is pasted to the lid. This printed label reads, “8m/m10” / “320” / 25 CARTOUGHES POUR REVOLVERS A PERCUSSION CENTRALE / 8039 / SOCIETE FRANCAISE DES MUNITIONS DE CHASSE, DE TIR & DE GUERRE. / 30 Rue Notre Dame des Victoires, PARIS.”
The “Societe Francaise des Munitions” (SFM) was the business of S.A. Gevelot in Paris. At the beginning, the activity of the company consisted in manufacturing the sabers for the Royal Gendarmerie at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1823 the company was authorized to use the fulminate of mercury in the manufacture of primers and to make small arms cartridges. This authorization was renewed by Ordinance of King Louis-Philippe in March 1845, then at the end of March 1852 by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, President of the French Republic. Gevelot developed the production of ammunition from 1820 to 1980 and forged the worldwide reputation.
