Here is a minty example of the patented .54 caliber Hunt & Jennings self-propelled "Loaded Ball" or "Rocket Ball".
This is a completely self-contained round; being a lead bullet with an exceptionally deep cavity filled with the powder charge. A slice of cork sealed the base and a small hole allowed the percussion cap to ignite the cartridge.
This specimen is in perfect condition. This type was not stamped with patent number. A previous collector’s inventory number remains on the opposite side. Cork remains in base.
This bullet/cartridge was patented by Walter Hunt of New York City on August 10, 1848. These loaded balls were specifically designed to be used in the Jennings patented single loading and repeating rifles.
