Included in a wood display case is a cartridge wrapper from Selma Arsenal dated July 1864, seven complete cartridges, and a pack of percussion caps. The cartridges and caps came out of this wrapper. An excavated Enfield bullet is also included, just to illustrate the type of bullet inside of the cartridges.
The wrapper has a printed label, “10 Cartridges / ENFIELD RIFLE / MINIE & / RIFLED MUSKET / Cal. .577 or .58 / ELONGATED BULLET / SELMA ARSENAL, / JULY”. Wrapper has been professionally cleaned and conserved and is now wrapped around a block and tied with the original string. Wrapper and cartridges exhibit some discoloration from black powder; one cartridge had broken open in the unopened pack. Other staining on the label was because the pack originally came out of a rusty cartridge box tin. All remaining cartridges are strong and stable. Cartridges contain the .577 caliber English Enfield pattern bullet similar to the excavated specimen included.
This is a very rare opportunity to get something from Selma Arsenal. [jet][ph:L]
