Offered here is a japanned tin with a printed paper label pasted to the lid.
Marked “500 Berdan Primers. EXTRA STRENGTH. For Candle Practice Only. Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Bridgeport Conn.”
These primers were seated into spent cartridges and used for target practice on flaming candles. The extra strength feature of these primers would extinguish the candle flame if the soldier held true on target. An interesting concept on teaching marksmanship skills.
Tin is empty; very nice condition. [jet] [ph:L]
