Manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal in 1878, this 12-round packet of .45 caliber revolver ammunition was adopted for use in both the Colt Model 1873 and the Smith & Wesson Model 1875 Schofield.
This pack contains the slightly shorter .45 caliber internally primed pistol cartridge that was issued during the height of the Indian Wars on the Northern Plains and across Texas and New Mexico, replacing the earlier, and longer, M-1873 “Long Colt” cartridge. With the introduction of the Schofield pistol in 1875, this shorter cartridge could be used in both the Colt and Schofield (with its shorter cylinder) and thus simplified the process of issuing ammunition.
This packet is in very good condition, still sealed and with the pull string still intact. The label is complete and fully legible, “12 / Revolver Ball / CARTRIDGES, / Caliber .45. / Frankford Arsenal, 1878.” There is some wear on outer edges and the paper has split on one of the end edges, but the packet is very solid.
A great representative of the ongoing development of ammunition during the Indian War period, these are key packets for any collection. [jet] [ph:L]
