This is the combustible paper cartridge for the Merrill carbine. Cartridges for the Merrill have gotten hard to come by these days. The Merrill bullet is .54 caliber with pointy nose, three grooves, and a solid base. Usually seen in the regulation tan cartridge paper, the red paper was known to be used at the St. Louis Arsenal. This has had some cracks in the old paper professionally repaired and is now completely solid and in good overall condition.
A rare Civil War carbine cartridge. [jet] [ph:jet]
