These cartridges are copper-cased, rimfire cartridges. These are also known as “.38 Long” cartridges and have an overall length of 1.305”. There is no headstamp on these early cartridges.
Rifles of this caliber were produced by Remington, Ballard, Stevens, and Frank Wesson. Revolvers that used this type of cartridge were by Prescott, Hopkins & Allen, Forehand & Wadsworth, and Colt. [jet] [ph:L]
