Used in the Union’s breech-loading Spencer repeating carbine and rifle, this .52 caliber, copper rimfire cartridge is in excellent original condition. Artifact features a conical-shaped lead bullet with two grooves seated in a copper case. Also known as the 56-56 Spencer cartridge. This is the type used during the Civil War.
At least five companies make these cartridges. These were completely self-contained rimfire cartridges: bullet, powder, case, and primer in one piece. Made under Smith and Wesson’s patent (#27,933 dated April 17, 1860), the cases went through eight steps in the forming process. Fulminate was then “spun” into the recesses of the rim, the powder charge was inserted, and a bullet was crimped in place. No headstamp.
A fine example of a Civil War Spencer carbine/rifle cartridge. [jet] [ph:L]
