Offered here is a “regulation” paper cartridge for the Model 1842, .69 caliber muskets that had been rifled after the fact.
The paper cartridge contains a large caliber 3-groove minie ball and powder charge. The “regulation” cartridge is tied with string above the bullet and the other end closed with a series of folds to create the tail.
This is the finest condition specimen we’ve ever seen. Due to the weight of the large bullet, most of these cartridges that have survived exhibit cracks and tears (and repairs) to the cartridge paper. This example shows none of that. [jet] [ph:L]
