This is a .41 caliber revolver cartridge for the French LeMat revolver. The cartridge remains in excellent condition.
The nine-shot LeMat revolver also had a smoothbore barrel that fired buckshot. Because of this, the Confederate Ordnance Manual called the LeMat revolver the “Grape-shot pistol”. As many as 2000 to 3000 of these revolvers were run through the blockade. These unusual weapons are known to have been carried such well-known soldiers as J.E.B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson.
This small revolver cartridge was made at the Richmond Laboratory on Brown’s Island.
A rare Confederate-made cartridge for one of the rarest revolvers. [jet] [ph:L]
