Open package of Colt’s .31 caliber revolver cartridges. This is a drilled wood block that was split in half and wrapped with a printed paper label. This type of packaging follows Colt’s patent of 1859 utilizing a tear-string type device of string or wire.
Back half of the split wood block is broken. Printed paper label for “6 COMBUSTIBLE ENVELOPE CARTRIDGES” is complete but dirty in spots. For “COL. COLT’S PATENT REVOLVING POCKET PISTOL” with Colt’s address below that. Thin wire that facilitated opening is gone except for the nub that was attached to the block.
Six cartridges remain although powder is gone and the cartridge paper on several has deteriorated. Still a very displayable example for a cased revolver or as display example of Colt’s patent #23,230 of March 15, 1859. [jet]
