Item Code: 302-100

This is an original English-made Enfield cartridge for the .577 caliber Enfield rifle.  Made by the firm of E. & A. Ludlow Brothers in Birmingham England and imported into the Confederacy through the Union blockade.  The cartridge is complete and in displayable condition. Cartridge is made of English “white fine” paper with the bullet end lubricated and with the remains of the original green label pasted around the middle. The label read, “E. & A. LUDLOW / BIRMINGHAM”. These cartridges contain a lead Enfield bullet having a plug cavity with a boxwood plug inserted. Bullets made by Ludlow are well known to collectors because they have either a raised “L”, “L1”, or “L2” die stamped into the top pf the cavity. The cartridge paper remains in good condition; there is some discoloration to the green label.

A Confederate-imported cartridge from a rarely encountered English maker.  [jet]
