This is an unopened original pack of ten “waterproof & combustible” musket cartridges by Johnston & Dow in excellent condition. The wrappers are rarely seen, and a full, unopened pack like this is extremely rare to find. The bullet used in these cartridges is a common 3-groove minie ball. It is the cartridge construction that makes these special. They were to be loaded whole without biting or tearing the cartridge.
Johnston & Dow received patent #33,393, #34,061, and #35,687 dated October 1, 1861, January 7, and June 24, 1862, for their cartridges. Using paper or fabric that was treated to make it combustible, the cartridge case was pasted to the bullet and was then covered with collodion to make it waterproof.
And these were indeed waterproof; excavated specimens are recovered on a regular basis with the cartridge case intact.
This is a super nice, solid pack of rare cartridges. [jet]
