This is a hand-operated Winchester Model 1882 loading tool for the .38-40 cartridge. This tool allowed owners of the Model 1873 and 1892 rifle to re-use their spent cartridges while on the frontier...an absolute necessity when the nearest town was often hundreds of miles away. Overall, the tool is in used condition with light surface rust and some pitting. Worn markings read, “MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” on the top lever and “38 WCF / PAT. OCT. 20, 1874. NOV. 7, 82” on the lower portion. The decapping pin is missing as they usually often are. An important tool that would make a great accessory to any Winchester rifle or carbine in this caliber. [jet]
