From the collection of author Dean Thomas comes this wooden crate meas. approx. 19.00 in. long x 11.00 in. wide x 6.25 in. tall. The crate is nailed and is still holding together well. The outside surfaces are painted a dark olive drab. The body of the box does exhibit the normal wear a crate of this age is expected to have. Worn edges, heavy wear around the fastening points, some minor cracks, and warping at the joints. This box does have some severe wood beetle damage on the bottom plank. A third of the surface of this plank has been eaten away exposing the naked wood underneath. However, it has not weakened the box or obliterated any markings. The lid is complete and in good condition. There are two horizontal cracks that run the length of the lid but due to the braces underneath this is not a problem. The lid does have stenciling but it is unreadable due to age and wear. The underside of the lid has a modern Ohio address written in black ink. Of course this is not seen with the lid in place.
Both side pieces are stenciled “FROM SAN ANTONIO ARSENAL, SEPT. 20, 1872” This wording is very light on one side and can only be seen in the right light on the other. The lettering is/was white and using letters 0.75 of an inch high. One end piece is stenciled with “CAL .50” on either side of the handle, and “MODEL 1865 SPENCER CARBINE, MANUFACTURED BY SAGE AMMUNITION WORKS, MIDDLETOWN, CONN.” This stenciling is done in red ink, again with 0.75 letters. Most of the stenciling is readable but wear and rubbing has made it light in some areas. [ad]
