This group comes housed in a riker box that has a mat laid over the top and then the whole thing slides into a modern ornate frame.
The central item is the Gallager Carbine tool. This iron tool has a box wrench at one end for use on the carbine cone while the other end has a flathead screw driver. A third arm is attached by a central pin. This arm has a round opening on the end that will help pull a spent cartridge from the carbine. The tool is in very good condition and is opened to display all three blades.
Below the tool are one complete brass cased Gallager cartridge and one spent brass casing. The cartridge is in very nice unfired condition while the casing has some minor dents from use.
The tool itself is hard to come by but what makes this grouping special is the period instruction sheet on the use of the Gallager carbine. This sheet is framed at top center. The sheet meas. approx. 6.75 inches long x 4.50 inches wide. It has three vertical fold lines and the upper left corner has some loss of text due to peeling of the layers of paper. Across the top the label reads;
-IRECTIONS FOR USING
THE
---LAGER CARBINE
The sheet then goes on to instruct the soldier how the weapon can be loaded and how to use the tool to extract a stubborn cartridge and how to clear a clogged cone. Across the bottom is “RICHARDSON & OVERMAN MANUFACTURERS…” The fold lines hurt the text a bit but despite this it can be easily read.
The tool, cartridge and used casing are anchored to the riker box by strands of copper wire but can be removed without damage if other housing is desired.
