The D.C. Sage Company of Middletown, Connecticut produced and supplied the Army Ordnance Department with the newer .50 caliber carbine cartridges in January 1866. This post-war rimfire cartridge, produced for the Model 1865 Spencer carbine, was also known as the 56-50 Spencer round supplied to the government. These cartridges were headstamped by Sage Ammunition Works with the mark “S.A.W.” variation on the base. The metallic .50 caliber cartridge measures a total length of 1.62” and has a flat-top lead bullet fitted to a 1 1/8” long brass cartridge casing. Conical lead head wears a coat of dark gray patina while the brass casing exhibits a dark bronze patina. Excellent condition.
