Dated 1855 [total 1855-57 production 4, 021] .58 caliber, percussion single-shot with rifled bore. Overall length of pistol 17.5”; overall length with shoulder-stock attached 28.25.
Standard brass mountings—forestock cap, barrel band, trigger & butt; shoulder-stock fore-stock, butt, & swivel mount. Standard iron & brass markings: Lock plate [right to left], “U.S. Springfield / Eagle motif [Maynard tape primer gate]/ 1855”, with Barrel displays barrel date “1855” with “V” & “P” proofs over eaglehead. Brass pistol & shoulder-stock butts display respectively the numeral “8” & “U.S.” Markings very slightly worn, but entirely legible.
The iron work barrel exhibits semi-bright patina, with slight pitting at the front of the barrel, and slightly more at the rear, & down the backstrap. Brass mountings also semi-bright, while exhibiting minor dings consistent with age & usage. Barrel bore displays light to medium pitting.
Walnut pistol stock & shoulder-stock display matching patinas, rich brown in color, while exhibiting the usual minor dings and bruises.
Else VG. An exceptional collector’s piece, with the extremely rare [and matching!] shoulder stock. One of three US pistols made by the Springfield Armory [the other two being the M1817 flintlock and the M1911 Colt.]
