J.H.Merrill, Baltimore Maryland, manufactured around 15,000 carbines. They are 54 caliber, percussion, single shot breechloaders. All iron is finished bright or blued except the casehardened lock, breech and breech lever. Butt, trigger guard and barrel bands are made from brass. All carbines are serial numbered from 1 up. This is known as a transitional model carbine that has features that evolved over time. The serial number is 4763. The breech lever is a type I marked J.H.MERRILL BALTO./PAT. and the lockplate is J.H.MERRILL BALTO./PAT JULY1858/APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61 with an eagle and date”1863”. The stock is a very good condition type II stock without a patchbox. Breech plunger is a copper –faced plunger, which is used in the type II carbine. Breech lever is secured by type I latch of flat, knurled type with an early type I sight. Stock has very faint cartouche on the left side of the stock opposite the lockplate. Bore is semi-bright with strong rifling. Action is mechanically good.
