This Civil War Model 1860 Spencer breechloading, repeating rimfire carbine was contracted and produced by the Spencer Rifle Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Some 144,500 Spencer carbines and rifles were contracted to the US government for military use. In very good original condition, the M1860 Spencer carbine has a 20” long barrel fitted to its two piece walnut stock / fore-end. Metal frame exhibits no original case colors or any bluing. A smooth, dark plum colored patina covers all gunmetal. Barrel exhibits some light splotching near the muzzle area and retains its original folding rear sight with ladder and slide. Front blade sight original. The dusty bore exhibits original six-groove rifling that has slight pitting. Should clean up to semi-bright.
Black walnut stock has normal dings, dents and abrasions from use and age and appears to have been refinished at one time. Left side of stock exhibits a slight surface crack. Stock shows two light government cartouches visible behind the bar tang, in addition to a nice section of sling swivel wear on the left side of stock. No chips or slivers of wood missing. Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860” in three lines. Right hand portion of the stamping is very thin. Serial # 46132 located at the rear of frame near the hammer.
Original carbine sling bar and sling ring are tightly attached to the left side of stock. Lock screws are original and not buggered. Iron butt plate tight and wears a mottled dark gray coloring. Cartridge tube is original and in strong condition. Carbine exhibits crisp, strong mechanics. Retains its original iron swivel ring at toe of stock. A fine Civil War Model 1860 Spencer carbine.
