Invented and patented by Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York in late 1855, here is an original Civil War Smith carbine in mint condition. This single-shot, percussion carbine is a .50 caliber, breechloader that measures approximately 39” long overall.

Two-piece black walnut stock is made up of a 9” forearm held by a single barrel band and a single screw. Shoulder portion has two very fine, government inspector cartouche. A very small sub-inspector’s initial is found stamped in front of the butt plate tang. Wood is in rarely encountered, minty condition with only one noticeable ding on the left side behind the barrel band.

The 21 ½” long round/octagonal barrel surface wears 100% of the beautiful original dark bluing. The same small sub-inspector’s initial (N) as seen on the stock, is stamped on left barrel facet near frame. Barrel has original blade front sight and flip-up rear sight. Stamped with serial number “19241” on underside at the hinge.

Left side of breech block is strongly stamped, “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICKOPEE FALLS” and “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” visible over the sling bar.  Hard to see located directly under the sling bar is stamped, “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857.” The frame exhibits strong case colors as does the barrel band.

Rear sight, top spring, trigger guard, trigger, and butt plate all show 100% original blue.

Carbine exhibits sharp, crisp mechanics. Bore with rifling is bright, quite possibly unfired.

A better condition specimen will not likely be found. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.   [jet][ph:L]
