Presented here is a Model 1843 Hall-North .52 caliber, breechloading percussion carbine, sometimes referred to as a Side Lever Hall.

This interesting carbine has a 21” round barrel with two barrel bands that secure it to the walnut stock. Steel barrel is smooth and mostly dark brown. Top flat of barrel is unmarked where a “STEEL” stamp is often found (behind the open rear sight) on post 1848 production. Due to the configuration of the breech block and small bore, a proper look through the bore is not possible (we don’t have an extra small bore light), but from the muzzle it appears somewhat dirty with no rifling.

Receiver opens by operating a lever located on the right side of the gun. Top flat of receiver is marked with an extremely well-worn five-line address, “U.S / S. NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN. / 1851”.  Hammer/trigger mechanics are crisp and strong. Weapon retains its original button-head ramrod. Long sling bar and ring mounted to left side. All gun metal has matching color and wear. There is a noticeable “halo” of light pitting surrounding the front of the breech block where there was heavy escape of gases.

The black walnut stock shows light use and wear. There is a government cartouche visible on each side of the stock behind the receiver. Displays a very nice deep red-brown wood tone.

A fine example of a much less-often encountered carbine. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.  [jet] [ph:L]
