The Joslyn carbine Model 1864, often referred to as the Second Model, was a cavalry weapon that used an innovative pivoting breechblock system invented and patented by Massachusetts gun designer Benjamin Franklin Joslyn in 1855. The Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut, produced 16,500 carbines by early 1865.

Designed for field use with Federal cavalrymen, the Joslyn carbine fired a standard Spencer rimfire cartridge of .52 caliber (the # 56-56 cartridge). Joslyn’s unique loading arrangement consisted of pulling the breechblock “knob”, pivoting the breechblock to the left and then inserting the round. The knob latch for the breechblock, the covered firing pin, and its iron furniture are characteristics of the Model 1864 Joslyn.

This weapon is in very fine condition and exhibits a pleasing appearance with a fine walnut stock and dark iron mounted furniture. Carbine bears the serial number of “9109” on top of the breechblock and on the breechblock tang.

The M1864 Joslyn carbine has a 22” long round barrel fitted to a one-piece walnut stock. The fore end of which is secured by a single iron barrel band. The barrel has inspector’s initials stamped on left side at breech. Barrel exhibits nice original tone with scattered light oxidation overall. The bore is bright and clean with good rifling. The rear surface of the hinged breechblock, under the firing pin, exhibits strong patent stampings “B.F. JOSLYN’S PATENT / OCTOBER 8^TH 1861 / JUNE 24^TH 1862”. Two-leaf rear sight has a “V” notch and sits at the rear of the barrel while at the front is a large pinched sight. Case hardened lockplate is stamped “JOSLYN FIRE ARMS Co. / STONINGTON CONN. / 1864” in front of the hammer. Mechanics are crisp and strong.

Stock is in very good condition with normal dings and scratches from use and storage. The carbine’s steel sling bar and sling ring are tightly attached to the left side of stock. Two government cartouches are clearly visible. Butt plate is stamped “US” with inspector’s initials stamped in the stock just at end of butt plate tang. A crude letter “C” is carved on the left cheek.

This Joslyn carbine is a very fine example and will enhance any military display or weapons collection.  [jet] [ph:L]
