This Colt Model 1860 Army is serial #85402 and was produced in 1863. However, it should be noted that both the cylinder and the loading lever are reproductions. The weapon has an overall gray appearance with hints of blue on the barrel.
The round barrel measures 8.00 inches long with front sight and a worn barrel marking of “ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.“ The reproduction loading lever is complete with catch and operates properly. The bore is mostly clean with fair rifling however there is a ring of pitting approximately a third of the way down the barrel. Wedge pin is unmarked.
The 6-shot reproduction cylinder retains about 95% of the cylinder scene and all the nipples are in good condition. All of the stops are gone. Cylinder has been stamped with a matching serial number of 5402. Action is mechanically perfect and indexes properly.
The frame has three screws and a very faint mark of “COLT’S PATENT” in two lines below the cylinder. The word “COLT” is visible while the word “PATENT” is not. All three screw heads on the frame show light wear. The frame has no pitting and matches the rest of the weapon in color.
Walnut grips have moderate to heavy wear. Each grip has had a carefully done old repair. A very thin piece of wood has been added to the bottom of both. Also, the center of the bottom had a carved square cut into it for the purpose of passing a lanyard around the base of the grip frame. This has been filled in with wood putty. There are no inspector’s cartouche marks on the wood. [ad] [ph:L]
